Festival de Fontfroide

MUSIC AND HISTORY FESTIVAL

Founded at the end of the 11th century, Fontfroide Abbey passed into the hands of the Cistercian Order in 1145. It soon became one of the richest Cistercian abbeys in Christendom, a bastion of Catholic orthodoxy in the heart of Cathar country. Its architectural ensemble, diverse and varied, is still in very good condition. The abbey is open to the public to see the church, the chapter house, the cloister, the refectory, as well as the 18th century additions and its gardens and terraces. Deacralised and in private hands since 1908, the abbey hosts all kinds of activities and cultural events such as, since 2005 and annually, the Festival of Music and History for intercultural dialogue directed by Jordi Savall.
