Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations triumph at the Salzburg Festival with Schubert’s last two symphonies

05/08/2025

After the overwhelming success of the past two years at the Salzburg Festival with their full performance of Beethoven’s symphonies, Jordi Savall and his orchestra Le Concert des Nations once again captivated the audience on Friday 1 August with a concert dedicated to Schubert’s Symphonies No. 8 and No. 9.

Both critics and audience praised the depth and beauty of a performance that moved listeners at one of the world’s most prestigious festivals.

The newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten headlined:
“Jordi Savall at the Salzburg Festival: a call for peace and a celebration of Schubert”
“The Catalan conductor and his ensemble Le Concert des Nations were acclaimed for an ‘Unfinished’ Symphony that lacked nothing, and for Schubert’s final symphony.”

The specialist portal Drehpunktkultur highlighted:
“From the depth of four double basses, and despite a moderate tempo, the first Allegro movement built up into increasingly dramatic emotional outbursts. (…) Everything was beautifully shaped within the original sound of the wind instruments. The later, brighter landscapes of the Andante —calm and peaceful— were also exquisitely phrased.”

This new success strengthens the international presence of Jordi Savall and his ensemble, who have been invited to the Salzburg Festival almost every year since 1987. His artistic vision —defined by a constant search for authenticity and expressiveness— continues to inspire audiences worldwide.

Next year, Austrian audiences will have the chance to enjoy his unique approach once again, with a programme dedicated to the music of Vivaldi composed for the Ospedale della Pietà, performed by La Capella Reial de Catalunya and the all-female orchestra Les Musiciennes du Concert des Nations.

We are deeply grateful for this unanimous international recognition, and for the ongoing trust of a festival that continues to support our artistic work year after year.
