Jordi Savall opens L’Auditori’s Early Music Season and celebrates 20 years of El so original with Mendelssohn

15/10/2025

L’Auditori has unveiled the programme for its 2025-2026 Early Music season, which this year highlights the 20th anniversary of El so original, a project conceived and directed by Maestro Jordi Savall.

It was Savall himself who inaugurated the new season with a concert dedicated to Felix Mendelssohn, stepping away from the Baroque and Classical repertoire to explore the Romantic period. The programme featured the Scottish Symphony and the ballad for soloists, choir and orchestra The First Walpurgis Night.

The concert brought together the chorus La Capella Nacional de Catalunya and the orchestra Le Concert des Nations, joined by four guest soloists under the direction of Maestro Savall.

During the press conference held earlier that same day, on 14th October, Savall underlined the importance of keeping the tradition of early music alive:

“It is essential to keep this music and its history alive, which would otherwise be forgotten. The project seeks to recover the original sound of the instruments of the time, as well as the richness of the musicians’ interpretation and the ancient traditions that surrounded it. We are very pleased that a venue like L’Auditori gives a place to this music.”

This season’s programme will also include three additional concerts within the El so original series:

  • 28 January: Program to be confirmed by the Jove Capella Reial de Catalunya, conducted by Lluís Vilamajó.
  • 29 March: Christ on the Mount of Olives and The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross by Beethoven and Haydn.
  • 11 May: Venetian Baroque at the Ospedale della Pietà, a full homage to Vivaldi.

With this programme, L’Auditori reaffirms its commitment to promoting and renewing the historical musical heritage, while celebrating two decades of a project that has played a key role in rediscovering and reinterpreting the original sound of early music. As Víctor Madem, Director of L’Auditori, stated: “We are delighted to welcome Maestro Savall once again – he has truly become a cherished tradition in our home.”
