CONCERTS

Jordi Savall returns to Vienna, invited by the Konzerthaus, to complete the grand cycle of Beethoven’s Symphonies.

26/06/2025
  • The concerts will take place on 24th and 26th June, 2025, at the Wiener Konzerthaus, with a program dedicated to Symphonies No. 1, 2, and 4 (Tuesday, 24) and Symphonies No. 8 and 9 (Thursday, 26).

Jordi Savall returns this June to the Konzerthaus in Vienna to conclude one of his most ambitious projects in recent years: the complete interpretation of Beethoven’s nine symphonies using period instruments and historical criteria. After the overwhelming success of the first two concerts of the cycle, held last February with sold-out tickets, the Catalan maestro now offers the final two performances of this unique symphonic journey –also with all tickets sold out–, leading his orchestra Le Concert des Nations and, on this occasion, also with La Capella Nacional de Catalunya.

These final concerts will take place on 24th and 26th June, 2025, with a program including Symphonies No. 1, 2, and 4 on the 24th and Symphonies No. 8 and 9 on the 26th. With these performances, it will be the first time the Wiener Konzerthaus hosts a complete Beethoven cycle performed with period instruments, a milestone that confirms the excellent international reception of the symphonic and choral projects carried out by Jordi Savall, combining professional musicians with the participation of new generations of young, professional graduates.

The first sessions held in February –dedicated to the “Eroica,” Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh symphonies– received unanimous praise from both the audience and critics. As reported by Klassik begeistert, “Maestro Savall and his musicians offered a rigorous and vibrant performance, with a ‘fabulous timpani,’ ‘extraordinary winds,’ and ‘excellent dramaturgy,’ even in the densest passages […] An absolutely delightful concert, leaving you eager to hear the next ones,” the critic concluded.

This project is part of the European program YOCPA (Youth Orchestra and Choir Professional Academies), aimed at training young performers and recovering musical heritage. The first academy, held last February, reunited the 51 musicians who had previously participated in the Academies held in 2019, with a significant gender balance. The second edition will take place this June in Austria with the participation of 103 musicians, most of whom also participated in the 2020 Academies –both orchestra and choir– again with gender parity. They will conclude their residency with performances on 24th and 26th June at the Konzerthaus in Vienna.

With this return to the Austrian capital, Savall reaffirms his commitment to Beethoven’s music, provisionally concluding a symphonic project that will continue in 2026 with the oratorio Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and in 2027 with the opera Fidelio and Missa Solemnis. These projects not only revive the original sound of the composer but also open the door for new generations of performers and listeners to rediscover the works of one of the most famous composers of all time.
