Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphonies 1, 2, 4, 8 & 9

Beethoven is not only about drama and darkness; his great compositions also radiate light and optimism. The First Symphony, written in homage to his teacher Haydn, and the Second, continuing to explore the classical legacy, are full of freshness, originality, and joy—a clear statement to his contemporaries. The Fourth Symphony, often overlooked, offers gentle lyricism and a captivating, tender character. The Eighth Symphony, shorter and lighter, carries a playful, ironic charm.

To prepare these works, an advanced training academy will take place from 18 to 23 June 2025 in Austria, hosting 103 musicians, half of whom will be women, and 50% will be young musicians under 39. The academy continues the series of “Beethoven Academies” held from 2019 to 2021, which explored all nine symphonies across four intensive sessions:

  • 2019 Spring: Symphonies 1, 2 & 4

  • 2019 Autumn: Symphonies 3 & 5

  • 2020 Spring: Symphonies 6 & 7

  • 2020 Autumn: Symphonies 8 & 9

The academy will be led by Jordi Savall, with concertmaster Jakob Lehmann, assistant concertino Manfredo Kraemer, and the core professional musicians of Le Concert des Nations.

Following the academy, two concerts will be held at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Vienna, Austria, on 24 and 26 June 2025.
